Common Foot Issues And How We Can Help

Sooner or later, most of us develop a foot issue. Although many foot problems can be successfully treated at home, ingrown toenails andFoot Issues other conditions may require a visit to the foot doctor. Sterling and Alexandria, VA, podiatrists Dr. Richard Lee and Dr. Steven Lin share information on common foot issues.

Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the sharp edge of nail begins to grow into the skin surrounding the nail. In the early stages, you may be able to free the trapped nail by soaking the foot in warm water and inserting a tiny piece of cotton under the nail. If you can't free the nail yourself, the edge of the nail can be removed during a minor procedure in our Sterling or Alexandria offices. If ingrown toenails occur frequently, removing the entire nail may be recommended.

Toenail fungus

You'll find no shortage of toenail fungus products in the foot care aisle of the drugstore. Unfortunately, these products aren't always effective because they can't reach the fungus present underneath the nail. Prescription topical or oral medications can be more effective. The newest option in toenail fungus treatment is laser light therapy. The light from the laser heats up the pigment in the fungus, killing it. Our practice was one of the first in the area to offer the innovative treatment.

Bunions

If you wear high heels to work, you may be at increased risk of developing bunions. Bunions are painful bumps that form at the base of your big toes. The problem can also occur if you wear tight shoes, have a foot imbalance or have injured your foot. Switching to more comfortable shoes and splinting or taping your foot may decrease pain. If your bunions are very uncomfortable, surgery may be needed to realign your bones.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis causes pain in your heels due to an inflammation of the plantar fascia. The fascia is a band of tissue that connects your toes to your heel. Foot exercise, night splints and orthotics can reduce the pain in most cases. Although surgery isn't common, it may be needed if your symptoms are severe.
