Six Signs Sound an Alarm to See Us

Our podiatrist at Alexandra Family Podiatry in Alexandria and Sterling, VA, says you have only one pair of feet and only one chance to take excellent care of them. You must take excellent care of your feet, and we can help you accomplish this goal if you pay attention to some warning signs.

If you have arthritis, diabetes, heart problems, or circulation issues, you are more at risk for foot infections that will be challenging to heal.

  • Pain
Pain is not ever normal. Pain is a reaction to an underlying problem. When pain occurs in your feet or ankles, please see us.
  • Appearance Changes
Examine your feet several times weekly and tell us if you notice any changes in skin color and temperature, thickened nails, discolored nails, cracks, foot cuts, peeling, scaling, or any growths on your foot. These issues can quickly worsen because your weight constantly pressures these weakened areas.
  • Peeling/Scaly Skin
Pay special attention between your toes, washing and drying the skin well. It is easy for the skin between the toes to break down, becoming infected.
  • Ingrown Toenails
We or you should trim your toenails at least monthly. Cut nails straight across. Do not cut the nails too short. Avoid cutting nails on the sides and corners, which can cause ingrown nails. Ingrown nails are dangerous, so if you have pain develop at the sides of your nail, see us and do not allow the pain to worsen.
  • Bunions/Corns/Callouses
Bunions, corns, and callouses cause foot discomfort and worsen over time. When these conditions worsen, it can be excruciating, and you may have to have a bunionectomy or wear orthotics to lessen pain issues. We can eliminate this pain.
  • Foot Structure Problems
If your feet have structural problems, these issues worsen over time, causing complications. These problems can cause other issues with your gait, spine, hips, and neck. Take care of the structural problems so they do not create worse complications. You may require orthotics, physical therapy, or extra padding in your shoes.
